Treatment of Athlete’s Foot

There are several methods of treatment of Athlete’s Foot, such as use of prescription medication (anti fungal antibiotics), use of over-the-counter medications, and several different alternative medicine formulations (such as tea tree oil) for Athlete’s Foot and other fungal infections. It is reported that even practice of good foot hygiene (such as keeping the foot dry and clean) can cure Athlete’s Foot in approximately 30-40% of cases, but use of appropriate anti fungal antibiotic is the most preferred method of treatment of Athlete’s Foot.

Conventional or prescription medication involves use of topical and/or oral antifungal medications (antibiotics). Topical antifungal along with good foot hygiene can cure as well as prevent reinfection.

Topical antifungal medications for Athlete’s Foot:

The topical antifungal medications are available as powder, cream, gel, ointment, spray, solution etc. The common (available over the counter) and most wide used topical antifungal medications for treatment of Athlete’s Foot as well as other fungal infection of skin are miconazole nitrate ointment (2%), terbinafine and 1% tolnaftate solution.

Other medications include prescription anti fungal antibiotics such as ketoconazole, itraconazole, nystatin etc.

Oral antifungal medications for Athlete’s Foot:

Oral medications used in treatment of Athlete’s Foot include griseofulvin, fluconazole, terbinafine (commonly used antifungal for Athlete’s Foot), itraconazole etc.

Oral griseofulvin is used as microsize and ultramicrosize crystals, which have no side effects such as aplastic anemia, which used to be a problem before use of microsize and ultramicrosize crystals.

The duration of treatment of Athlete’s Foot may be as long as 40-50 days or even longer. It is important to cure (remove all the infection fungus) the disease and not merely symptomatic improvement. On use of antifungal antibiotics the symptomatic improvement may occur in a week or two but the treatment need to be continued till removal of fungi and which may take several weeks.
