UTI is very common health problem among women. It is therefore important to prevent UTI among females. UTI during pregnancy can pose problem, because during pregnancy appropriate antibiotic therapy may not be possible to start due to risk to the growing fetus. Hence, it becomes more important to prevent it. If a pregnant woman suffer from UTI, she may be managed symptomatically by alkalinizing urine (and treated later with appropriate antibiotics after delivery), rather than treating with antibiotics., Prevention of UTI

Preventive measures may not be able to prevent all the UTIs, but it can certainly reduce incidence of UTIs among women.

  • Drink plenty of liquid, especially drink plenty of plain water to prevent UTI, if you suffer from UTI frequently. Drink at least 2 liters (approximately 8 glasses of water) of water daily as drinking water. You should drink throughout the day. Drink some extra water (over the usual 2 liters) if you get exposed to heat or exercise or during summer.
  • Do not leave any residual urine (the urine that remain in the bladder after voiding) in the bladder and try to empty bladder fully. Because, presence of large volume of residual urine is one of the causes of UTI. Women with impaired bladder tone suffer from frequent UTIs, because of high residual urine left after voiding.
  • Empty bladder immediately after sexual intercourse and clean genital area with clean water thoroughly. Sexual intercourse is one of the causes of UTI, if voiding after sex and cleaning not done properly, as seen among newly married women.

  • After urination of defecation, clean from front to back (and not from back to front), which will prevent spread of bacteria from anal region to urethra and vagina, potentially infect and cause UTI. For people not using toilet paper (using water after defecation) clean thoroughly with ample water.
  • Avoid using irritants feminine products such as deodorant sprays, powder etc. in genital area, as it may irritate urethra and cause UTI.
  • Do not use undergarments more than 10-12 hours and change frequently.
  • Do not clean genital area with soap frequently, as it may cause dryness, which may predispose UTI.
  • Maintain good personal hygiene.

It may not be possible to prevent UTI completely by following the above mentioned instruction, however, it can reduce incidence of UTI to a great extent.
