MRI or Magnetic Resonance Imaging is an advanced medical imaging technique which can visualize the internal body parts and to some extent some of the functions of the human body. MRI scan can give better contrast for soft tissue structure such as brain, blood vessels, muscles and is preferred more than CT (computed tomography). MRI brain scan, MRI scan of a vascular part etc. can be effectively used to find out extent of damage or any pathology which may be present.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging does not use any ionizing radiation, unlike CT which can cause radiation hazards. Magnetic Resonance Imaging, instead of ionizing radiation, uses powerful magnetic field which align he hydrogen atoms (water is composed of one oxygen atom and two hydrogen atoms or protons) present inside water content of our body along with the direction of the magnetic field. Radiofrequency fields are used for the magnetic field alignment to change, which change the rotation of the protons or hydrogen atoms to change and the change is detected by the scanner present in Magnetic Resonance Imaging machine.

Uses of MRI:

Although MRI is relatively new technique, it has already occupied a position in the field of medicine that is unique. The uses of MRI are vast in the field of medicine and it has special place in the field of research work too. Some of the common use of MRI are MRI brain scan (to find out if there is any pathology in brain such as tumor), cancer imaging (to find out the extent of spread of cancer tissue as well as to detect the extent of primary cancerous tumor), cardiovascular problems (to find out any abnormality in blood vessels such as aneurysm of blood vessels or any other anatomical abnormality), musculoskeletal (to find out if there is any abnormality I bones and muscles and ligaments, such as torn or sprained or injured ligaments) etc. There are also many more applications of MRI in the field of medicine. The application of MRI is still increasing and new areas are being covered with MRI.
