Five Uncommon Causes of Constipation

Most of us have suffered from occasional constipation, many of which usually resolve even without any medication and most of the occasional constipation usually disappear after taking medication or after lifestyle and food habit change. However, sometimes constipation may occur due to some unusual causes. If you are suffering from constipation without any reason you can think of, and it is not improving, despite food habit and lifestyle changes, it may be due to uncommon causes of constipation.

Too much dairy product may cause constipation:

Consumption of excess dairy products such as cheese, and other high fat dairy products, which are low in fiber can lead to constipation, especially if you are consuming them for long time. If you combine dairy products with low fiber foods such as eggs and meat, the condition may be worse. Make sure to consume at least 25 to 30 grams of fiber daily, even if you are consuming dairy products, meat and egg, to prevent constipation.

Diabetes and other neurological diseases may cause constipation:

If you have constipation, check your blood sugar level to know if you have diabetes, because diabetes may cause constipation. This is because; diabetes can destroy ability to digest food normally. Neurological conditions such as multiple sclerosis or Parkinson’s disease may be other uncommon causes of constipation. It is worth consulting a neurologist, if you have constipation which is nagging.

Depression and anti-depressants may cause constipation:

If you suffer from depression, you may also suffer from constipation. Depression can cause general slowdown of body’s normal processes, including the gut and cause constipation. Ironically many medications used for treatment of depression (such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and older tricyclic antidepressants) can also cause constipation. Hence, if you suffer from depression and taking medications, consideration should be given to use stool softener for easy bowel movements.

Common allergy and hypertension medications may cause constipation:

Common allergy medications (antihistamines) can cause constipation, as well as commonly prescribed medications for high blood pressure such as diuretics and calcium channel blockers. Diuretics increase urine output and low water may be responsible for hard stool and constipation.

Pregnancy may cause constipation:

Pregnancy is common cause for constipation. If you are pregnant, there is risk of constipation. Growing fetus and enlarged uterus put pressure on the gastrointestinal tract and interfere with normal bowel movements and lead to constipation. During pregnancy, physical exercise is also less, which is another reason for constipation.

If you are suffering from constipation, consider the above mentioned five medical conditions. Because you may be suffering from one of the above mentioned problems, treatment of the cause will automatically relieve constipation.
