Find Out If You Are at Risk of Hypertension

Hypertension or high blood pressure is a common health problem, especially among urban population with sedentary lifestyle and more than normal body weight. Hypertension, as such may not produce any symptoms, especially at the initial stage. Hence, many patients with hypertension may not be aware of the disease they are suffering from. High blood pressure may be detected during visit to a doctor or clinic for some other medical condition or it may be detected during routine medical checkup.

In developed industrial countries such as United States, hypertension affect as many as one in every three adults, affecting as many as 60-70 million people in US. This is alarming indeed, because hypertension is a leading cause of death, by causing heart attack or brain stroke. Hypertension is even more common among African Americans than Caucasians.

You are at high risk of developing high blood pressure if you have:

  • Obesity (BMI of 30 or more) or overweight.
  • Family history of diabetes or you belong to racial group with higher incidence of hypertension
  • If you are currently in pre-hypertension stage. Systolic blood pressure of 120-139 mm Hg and diastolic blood pressure of 80-89 mm Hg is considered as pre-hypertension stage.
  • If you are a man of more than 45 years of age or woman of more than 55 years

You may also get hypertension if you have any of the following habits/conditions:

  • If you have habit of eating too much salt regularly
  • If you drink too much alcohol
  • You live a sedentary lifestyle and do not engage in regular physical activity
  • If your diet is deficient in potassium.
  • If you are taking certain medications which can raise blood pressure
  • If you have stressful life or suffering from anxiety/stress for long time
  • If you are a smoker, because smoking can cause raise in blood pressure, although temporarily. Hence, chain smokers are at higher risk of developing hypertension.

Do not ignore if your blood pressure is not normal. Hypertension may not cause any symptom in majority of individuals, especially in initial stage, which makes people ignore the deadly disease. Hypertension is leading cause of mortality and morbidity and if left unmanaged, it may lead to heart disease, brain stroke, kidney problems leading to kidney failure, and many other complications. Hence, never ignore hypertension, because it may prove a great mistake.

You can check your blood pressure at home using electronic blood pressure measuring machine without visiting a doctor or a clinic, which are fairly accurate in measuring blood pressure. Keep a blood pressure measuring electronic machine at home and check your blood pressure regularly.
