Once your baby comes into your life, a new routine begins. This routine with your little one requires you to know the different aspects of your baby’s health and development. For your baby’s well-being, it is important for you to visit a doctor or health care provider.

Following is the check up schedule for your Newborn baby:

1 Month – This is the first check up after your baby’s birth. In this visit, you can expect your doctor do to the following things:

  • Weigh your baby to ensure that she/he has a healthy development.
  • Doctor may also give your baby a hepatitis B shot, if it wasn’t given at birth time.
  • Eyesight and hearing power will be checked.
  • Doctor will also check that the cord slump has fallen off and belly button is gaining a normal shape.
  • Doctor would ask about the sleeping habits and routine of feeding of your baby.

2 Month – You can expect the doctor to:

  • Check the baby’s weight and height.
  • Give the first round of vaccination. The recommended vaccines are hepatitis B , pneumococcal, DTaP, Hib, rotavirus, and polio
  • Address the any other physical concern such as baby acne, diaper rash and cradle cap.
  • Closely analyse your baby’s development, behaviour and temperament.
  • Check whether baby’s head has developed a flat spot.

4 Month – The 4th month check up involves:

  • Weighing and measuring your child to ensure healthy and steady development.
  • Measuring your baby’s head size to check his/her brain growth.
  • Second round of vaccination, which includes vaccines such as DTaP, Hib, polio, and rotavirus.
  • Doctor will suggest you baby’s bedtime routine.
  • Doctor will check other health concerns such as cold, constipation and flu.
  • You can ask questions about childcare.
  • Checking of baby’s movements like lifting her head or balancing the head to ensure proper physical development.

6 Month – In 6th month’s check, you can expect your baby’s doctor to:

  • Investigate the potential hearing problems.
  • Check baby’s fine motor skills.
  • Ask about your baby’s bowel movements.
  • Inquire about various things such as his/her sleeping routines, reaction to the outside world or has he/she started teething.
  • Doctor will give the required vaccination, if not given before.
  • Help you to chart out a plan to teach your baby to sleep in night.

9 Month – This visit includes:

  • Giving your baby any missed vaccine.
  • Weighing and measuring your baby. By this age, a normal and healthy baby settles into a long-term growth pattern.
  • Doctor will address your worries about prime conditions of this age- cold, fever, diarrhoea, cold, cough and ear or eye infection.
  • Doctor will check the baby’s skin to make sure he/she does not have iron deficiency, anaemia or lack of vitamin D.

12 Month – In this visit, doctor will do the following:

  • Will give the next round of immunizations, which include vaccines such as hepatitis A, chickenpox, third dose of polio, MMR and pneumococcal.
  • Will tell you how to deal with bumps, falls, and cuts, which are common once a baby starts crawling or walking.
  • Doctor will check the eyes and ears of your baby to catch any potential infection or developing defect.
  • Check that the baby is learning new skills and reacting to world around him. This ensures that he/she has a good and normal brain development.
