Know About Botox

Botox (brand name) is botulinum toxin A (protein in nature), which is made from bacteria (clostridium botulinum, C. butyricum, C. baratii and C. argentinense) that are responsible for botulism, a serious disease. Botulinum toxin has several therapeutic used such as in treatment of muscle spasm, cervical dystonia, overactive bladder and urinary incontinence, migraine headaches as well as for cosmetic purpose (which is most commonly known by non medical persons) to reduce or lessen wrinkles in face, which is a normal process of aging.

Most of the individuals who are not associated with medical profession know that Botox is used for cosmetic purpose, i.e. as anti aging or anti wrinkle medication to reduce facial wrinkles. There are other medical uses of Botox which most people not aware of.

If you plan to use Botox, do not forget to tell your health care provider if you are suffering from any of the medical conditions listed below:

  • Myasthenia gravis (a medical condition associated with muscle weakness and easy fatigue-ability).
  • Facial muscle weakness (drooping of eyelids, trouble raising your eyebrows, facial paralysis etc.
  • Asthma or other breathing problem.
  • Cardiovascular problems.
  • Bleeding disorders, problem in swallowing, seizures (epilepsy).
  • Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
  • Allergy to Botox.
  • Any prior surgery in face or going to have facial surgery.
  • Any previous use of botulinum toxin.

Take following precautions while using Botox:

  • Inform your health care provider if you are suffering from any of the medical conditions listed above.
  • Botulinum toxin A (Botox) injection should only be given by trained medical professional for any reason, even for cosmetic purpose.
  • Inform your doctor immediately if you notice any side effects of Botox such s drooping of eyelids, vision problem, muscle weakness, hoarseness of voice, loss of bladder controlĀ  and problem in breathing, talking or swallowing. These effects may be seen even several weeks after last Botox injection.
  • Do not use this more than prescribed. If you visit another doctor, do not forget to tell you are using Botox.
  • If you are allergic to Botox or any of the ingredients of the injection, do not use it.
  • The cosmetic and other effects of Botox are temporary and the symptoms (facial wrinkles, muscle weakness and other symptoms) may return after three months. The more you use, the earlier the symptoms may return.
