Health Reasons of Quitting Smoking

If you are a smoker, especially if you are smoking for many years, say 10, 20, 30 years and you have grown accustomed to smoking and the habit of smoking has become part of your lifestyle and you may even think that smoking does not impact you in any negative way, so you may thing why should you quit smoking, which has become your second nature (habit is a second nature and to give up natural things you may take very long and perseverance).

Most smokers, including you the reader (if you are smoker) of this article are aware that smoking is bad and there are ill effects of smoking, especially ill effects on health. Even the pack of cigarettes you buy may have warning such as “smoking is injurious to health” or “tobacco cause cancer” (in many countries the warnings are compulsory in cigarette packets or any tobacco products). You may even be thinking that there are so many smokers around me who are perfectly healthy and suffer from no health problem, so why quit smoking?

Health hazard is a strong reason for quitting smoking:

We all are aware of the health hazards smoking cigarettes may cause. There are several studies on the ill effects of smoking such as smoking one cigarette reduce your life expectancy by — minutes and I am not going for such a discussion here. The discussion here is about the cigarettes smoking has ill effects on health.

Smoking cigarettes is the major cause of lung cancer. More than 90% of lung cancers are directly due to smoking cigarettes and not by polluted air which many people may think. Polluted air cause some other respiratory problems such as asthma, COPD etc. Approximately 5%of the lung cancers are caused due to passive smoking. So it is clear that more than 05% of all lung cancers are mainly due to smoking (active as well as passive smoking).

Other than lung cancer smoking also cause many other major health problems such as heart diseases (coronary artery disease, atherosclerosis), other cancers (mouth, throat, esophagus, bladder, kidney, and pancreas are also caused by smoking cigarettes) and respiratory problems.

Many experts (including me, although I am no expert) believe that smoking is more evil than chronic drinking, as drinking cause health problems to the drinker only, but smoking can harm your near and dear ones by passive smoking. Most passive smokers are your children, spouse, colleagues, friends and relatives who are very important to you. I have seen many times where father is smoking and his infant child is on the lap and getting exposed to passive smoking. Nothing is more heart breaking than this scene, where father is pushing his child in the mouth of death.

So if you are smoker, quit smoking now and help yourself and your loved ones as well as serve the humanity.
