Why Plan Diet for Underweight?

Underweight is body weight of 10% to 20% lower than ideal body weight for age, height and sex or if BMI or body mass index is less than 18.5. BMI is calculated by “dividing body weight (in kilogram) by height in meter square. For example if body weight of a person is 50 kg and height is 1.5 meter than his BMI will be 22.22 (50 divided by 1.5 x 1.5 = 22.22).

If a person is underweight than he/she may have several medical problems like growth retardation (mainly in children), complication during pregnancy, increased susceptibility to infection, poor general health and related problems. The main aim of planning diet for underweight is to avoid these complications by bringing the body weight to normal. All the complication of underweight can be eliminated by bringing the body weight of underweight to normal.

The following are the main objectives of planning diet for underweight:

1.      The most important aim of planning diet for underweight person is to bring the body weight to normal. By bringing body weight to normal all the complications (some of which are potentially life threatening) which may arise due to underweight can be avoided and a normal healthy life is possible.

2.      Next important is to maintain body to normal after gaining normal body weight. This may be difficult to maintain without proper plan of diet. With proper diet the physiology of the body can adjust to maintain body weight to normal.

3.      The body stores should be replenished to normal. This can be done only by planning a proper diet, which can build body stores of vitamins, minerals, fats etc. These normal body stores can act as insurance for future underweight problem to a large extent.

4.      A properly planned diet for underweight can maintain good nutritional status for the underweight person after gaining body weight to normal.

    Gaining weight is difficult for underweight individuals. I think same as losing weight is difficult for obese.
