Irritable Bowel Syndrome or IBS is a common medical problem of gastrointestinal tract characterized by alteration of bowel habits (either diarrhea or constipation predominant symptom or they may become alternate symptoms), bloating of abdomen, abdominal discomfort, abdominal pain etc. The diagnosis of IBS is mainly based on symptoms it presents. Functional irritable bowel syndrome has no known organic cause. Currently IBS is diagnosed on the basis of symptoms alone.

The symptoms of IBS (and the disease itself) may occur after an infection or after a stressful event in life. IBS may be present along with many other gastrointestinal disorders such as colitis, celiac disease, fructose malabsorption, parasitic infection (such as giardiasis), functional constipation, inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis) etc.

What are the symptoms of IBS (irritable bowel syndrome)?

The symptoms of IBS include:

  • Abdominal pain/cramp, which is generally relieved by bowel evacuation. This is the most important symptom of IBS.
  • Alteration of bowel habit. A patient may suffer from diarrhea or constipation as predominant symptom. But diarrhea and constipation may also occur in same patient as alternating symptoms. Change in bowel habit may be accompanied by change in consistency of stool.
  • Bloating and flatulence are also common symptoms of IBS.
  • Abdominal distension and discomfort in abdomen, especially after eating. .
  • Passing of mucus in stool.

One also should be careful with the following symptoms, although they are not symptoms of IBS, because they may indicate other serious medical condition. If you have any of the symptoms with or without IBS, you should inform about these symptoms to your doctor. These are:

  • Black stool
  • Blood in stool or urine
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea that disturb your sleep
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Fever
  • Onset of IBS symptoms after 50 years of age
