, Ways to Stop Emotional Eating for Better Weight LossWhy is it that over half of the population of the United States is obese? Is it because we are served oversized portions of food in restaurants? Is it because we have fast food restaurants serving up high calorie, processed food that is addictive? Is it because the opportunity to buy organic, healthy food is difficult and expensive?

All of the above may be playing a role in our national obesity problem. But there is another culprit that is much larger and ominous than these issues combined: emotional cause for eating. Emotional eating is the true reason that the United States, and quite possible the world, is overweight. A lofty claim possibly, but isn’t it true that if we were in the moment and not concerned, fearful, worrisome, angry, sad, etc, then it would be much easier to step away from the table when the belly says it is time. Emotional baggage and boredom play monumental roles in being overweight, but they are not the end all. There are ways to work around them.

Keep reading to learn three tips to remove emotional eating from your life.

1. Introduce yourself to yoga. Yoga has an inept power to heal what has hurt us in the past. Even for those of us in the world that have spent many an hour talking with a therapist, or other modalities to clear the emotional pain of our lives, is able to find peace from yoga where there was none before. Through the breath and the movement, the body is able to cleanse, detox and release that which is holding us back, include emotional baggage. For example, a common place for many people to hold their issues is in their stomach, causing them problems such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Through the use of yoga, the body is given the opportunity to release and let go of the emotional tie that is connected to the pain in the abdominal region. This lets the body release cramping, bloating and indigestion.

2. Implement meditation. A true partner to yoga, meditation is another gift to allow ourselves to release the reason that we emotionally eat. Meditation is a tool of training the mind to be quiet, allowing clarity to come. This clarity helps wipe the slate clean, per say, allowing us to drop the emotional baggage for good.

3. Healthier things to eat to deal with emotional eating. No human is perfect and sometimes a little emotional eating isn’t the worst thing in the world. The important thing is what you eat. If you need to go for a sweet bite of something, try a little chocolate as it has natural uplifting qualities. If salty is more your style, go for some baked kale chips. Keep your emotional eating healthy and your waist will thank you.
