If your answer is yes, the reason(s) may be you think eating organic is healthier, organic foods are more tasty, safe and more nutritious, in compare to eating the normally grown foods (grains, cereals, vegetables, fruits etc.). You may also be thinking that eating organic will let you enjoy a comparatively disease free life. If you are thinking that organic foods have only health benefits, than it is time for you to think twice.  Organic foods like any other good things do have some negative effects on you and this article is about some negative or bad aspects about organic foods. This article is not against organic foods but it tries to address some negative aspects organic foods have and help individuals make right and educated decision about going organic.

Here are some negative aspects about organic foods that may help you to decide against going organic or at least you should give a second thought.

The following points may make you from eating organic:

  • If you think that organic foods are produced without any chemicals (chemical fertilizers and pesticides), you may be wrong. Some limited numbers of chemicals are allowed for growing organic foods.
  • Many European agencies (e.g. French Food Safety Agency, UK Food Standards Agency etc.) have accepted that foods grown with standard farming techniques are equally good (in terms of health safety and nutrition) as organic foods.
  • There is no consensus among scientific community that organic foods are safer and healthier than normally grown foods.
  • Organic foods are costlier than non organic foods.
  • You may not find organic foods in all places and organic foods may not be available easily as they may go off from market as no preservation technique is used for preserving organic foods.

What should you do?

If you think eating organic will make you healthier, it is time to think twice and think rational with appropriate information about nutrition. Our nutrition requires some major groups of nutrients namely proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals and trace elements. We should aim to get all the important nutrients from our diet and if you eat only organic you may not get all the essential nutrients you need. If your organic diet can supply all the nutrients we need for healthy life, no harm in eating organic.

Only cons of eating organic foods are discussed in this article, as we all are aware of the pros of organic foods (very little chemicals such as fertilizers and pesticides are used for growing organic foods if ever used, tastier and other benefits).
