We all know chest pain is one of the symptom of heart attack and we seek medical attention when we have chest pain. However, most of us are not aware of many other less specific symptoms/signs of heart attack. There are many other signs of heart attack, we may attribute to non-cardiac problems.   • Anxiety: prior to heart attack, a patient may feel serious anxiety of impending doom or serious fear of impending death without any explanation. Serious anxiety should prompt you to seek medical attention, because it may be initiation of a heart attack.
  • Shortness of breath: it usually indicate bronchial asthma or COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). But, shortness of breath may also be due to heart disease. It may be in the form of breathlessness with minimal exertion or no exertion at all. Do not ignore shortness of breath, thinking that it may be mild form of asthma.
  • Fatigue: fatigue can be a sign of heart disease, especially among women. Feeling of excessive tiredness may be a symptom of heart trouble, although there are several other reasons of fatigue. If you feel unusually fatigued without a proper explanation, visit your doctor to find out if it is due to heart problem. Fatigue is one of the common symptom of heart failure.

  • Sweating: you may be sitting comfortably in a cool room and suddenly you start sweating, may be a symptom of heart attack. Do not waste time and seek medical attention.
  • Nausea: sudden feeling of sick and nausea may be symptom of heart trouble. You may also have loss of appetite. Do not ignore the symptoms.
  • Pain in other body parts: pain may be initially in the chest. Which later on spreads to shoulders, arms, elbows, back, neck, jaw, or abdomen. This is an important symptom of heart attack. Sometimes there may be no chest pain and pain is present only in both arms, shoulders of other body parts.
  • Rapid pulse and weakness: rapid pulse along with weakness can be an important symptom of heart attack. Pulse may be rapid and irregular.
  • Dizziness: heart attack may cause light-headedness and disturbance of consciousness can be uncommon signs of heart attack.
  • Cough: a subtle symptom such as persistent cough can be sign of heart failure. Heart failure can result in accumulation of fluid in lungs and result in persistent cough. Hence, do not ignore persistent cough, as it may be heart failure, tuberculosis or other pulmonary problem.
