You can get gas and gas pain if you have following:

  • If you consume diet rich in fruits, vegetables, legumes and whole grains, which are rich in fiber (the indigestible part of the food, which forms the bulk of stool).
  • If you are intolerant to lactose or gluten, you are at risk of gas and gas pain.
  • If you have chronic medical condition of intestine such asirritable bowel syndrome and inflammatory bowel disease such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease.
  • If you drink carbonated beverages regularly.

Your doctor can determine if you suffer from gas and gas pain based on your medical history, dietary history, and physical examination. Your doctor may tap your abdomen or auscultate (listen with stethoscope) your abdomen and find out if you have intestinal gas problem. Your doctor may also recommend some tests depending on physical examination and symptoms.

Home remedies for gas and gas pain:

Change in lifestyle and some simple home remedies can help your reduce gas and gas pain. Some helpful measures include:

  • Eat slowly: do not gulp down the food. Instead eat slowly, chew your food properly before eating. If you find problem in slowing down your eating, try various methods such as putting down your fork in between bites.
  • Try smaller portions: many of the foods that cause gas and gas pain are healthy (foods with high fiber such as fruits, vegetables, pulses, whole grains etc.) and should be consumed regularly. Try taking small portions and see if you can adjust smaller portions of healthy foods without causing gas and gas pain.
  • Do not smoke: if you are a smoker, quit smoking immediately, if you have gas and gas pain. Smoking can make you swallow more air and also reduce healing power of intestine, if there are any ulcer/injury.
  • Do regular exercise: regular physical exercise can help removal of gas from intestine.
  • Do not drink through straw, such hard candies, drink directly from water bottle (drink from glass), all of these can increase amount of air swallowed.
  • Poorly fitted dentures can cause air to be swallowed. Hence, check your denture and get it fitted properly, if not fitted right.

Certain food tend to cause odor in intestinal gas (when you pass it causes offensive odor). Restrict consumption of these foods (cauliflower, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, beer etc.), that cause odor.
