To prevent laryngitis it is important to prevent dryness and irritation of vocal cords. The following measures can help prevent laryngitis.

  • Avoid smoking. It is also important to avoid passive smoking or second hand smoking. Hence, if your partner or any of your family members smokes, it is important to make him/her quit smoking. Smoking can make your throat (including larynx) dry and cause irritation.
  • Drink plenty of water or any liquid, such as fruit juice. If you are well hydrated, it makes mucus in throat thin and easy to clear.
  • Control alcohol consumption. Excess alcohol intake may lead to dehydration which is not good for laryngitis.
  • Reduce caffeine intake too. It can act as diuretic and cause excess fluid loss.
  • Prevent upper respiratory tract infection (avoid people with upper respiratory tract infection) or at least get treatment for upper respiratory tract infection promptly, when you get it.
  • Eat a healthy diet that contains adequate quantity of fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains, as these foods are rich in vitamins which keep mucus membrane of throat healthy.
  • Avoid spicy foods and foods that may trigger GERD or acid reflux.
  • It is important to avoid clearing throat (although there is irritation and urge to clear throat), as it may cause more harm than good by causing abnormal vibration of vocal cords, which may worsen laryngitis by causing more swelling of vocal cords. Clearing of throat irritate it and make it to secrete more mucus which increase irritation and the condition worsens.

Many home remedies are available that can improve symptoms in laryngitis. Some home remedies for laryngitis are:

  • Inhale moist air. Keep a humidifier at your home and make air moist/humid. Alternately you can inhale steam from a bowl of hot water or even take a hot water bath.
  • Drink plenty of fluid/water to keep yourself well hydrated.
  • Rest your voice as much as possible to give rest to vocal cords.
  • Avoid whispering as it put more stress to vocal cords than normal speech, contrary to common belief.
  • Moisten your throat by chewing gum, suck lozenges etc.
  • Avoid decongestants as they may cause dryness of throat.
