How to Prepare for Doctor’s Appointment for Ringworm?

Ringworm infection by what name it may be called, (dermatophytosis, tineasis or by any name) or at what location it may occur (if it occurs in scalp it is called tinea capitis, in groin it is called tinea cruris or in body it is called tinea corporis and so on), is very common health problem throughout the world. As Ringworm is a common skin infection (by fungus), we all should be aware and know what to expect from doctor and what questions to ask or clarify doubts regarding the common skin infection. Before consulting your doctor or dermatologist, you should know what to ask and what to expect from your doctor/dermatologist. Your appointment with your doctor or dermatologist may not be very long and you need to cover many aspects of the disease. It is wise to prepare for appointment before going for it.

Your doctor or dermatologist will be able to diagnose ringworm easily by history and clinical examination as most of the cases the symptoms are typical, except in rare cases such as use of topical steroid on the skin lesion.

What you should do before consulting your doctor?

You can prepare a list of questionnaire to ask your doctor during consultation:

  • What is the disease and what is the cause of the disease?
  • Do you need to confirm diagnosis with some tests?
  • Should I wait to see if the condition goes away on its own?
  • What is the best treatment option available and how long treatment is required?
  • What should I do to prevent spreading of the disease to other parts of the body?
  • Is it possible to prevent the infection from recurring?
  • What other general advice required during treatment?

What should you expect from your doctor?

Your doctor may ask following questions:

  • When did you first see the skin lesion(s)?
  • Have you had this type of skin lesion in the past?
  • Does the lesion cause itching or pain?
  • Does your pet or any family member have ringworm infection?
