Healthy Food that Whitens Your Teeth


We know by now that we need to eat the right foods, need to work out, and do stuff that is healthy for us. The first (and probably most obvious) source of whiter teeth is dairy products.  Now, you might be thinking to yourself that milk is a good choice because, duh, it’s white.  That’s actually not true.  The color of the food has next to nothing to do with how white it can make your teeth (although food dyes present in some dishes certainly have the potential to turn your teeth other shades).  What makes dairy products great for your chompers is that they contain calcium, which we all know leads to stronger bones and teeth.  As a bonus, calcium helps to strengthen the tooth enamel, which provides a protective barrier between the foods that will stain it and the absorbent dentin that makes up most of each tooth (the color of which can be seen through the transparent outer shell of enamel).

But that’s not all dairy can do to keep your whites pearly.  If you’re a big fan of cheese, you get some extra help in the enamel department.  Most cheeses have the additional property of neutralizing acids found in other foods and in plaque.  These acids attack the enamel and break it down, allowing stains to reach the porous dentin underneath, so chowing down on some cheese could be a great idea.  But if you’re not interested in consuming the fat contained in many cheeses, you can reach for crunchy fruits and vegetables instead (apples, carrots, celery, and more).  These items are not only good for your health (and your weight); they also require you to chew more, which stimulate saliva to neutralize acids in the same way as cheese might.

Finally, you should consider saying goodbye to beverages like soda, coffee, and so on in favor of chemical-free, dye-free water.  This liquid is not only essential for life and a healthy and functional body; it also rinses your mouth when you don’t have time to brush (or even if you do), washing away any bacteria or food particles that may be hanging around after you eat.  Sugar-free gum can also work in a pinch (although of course, brushing and flossing is better).

You don’t need to angle for a dental discount plan that will allow you to get laser whitening from the dentist.  In truth, most insurance policies won’t cover this elective procedure.  Instead, get on track with eating foods that will help to keep your teeth in their natural white state.  It’s far less expensive than the alternatives and so much better for your health.
