Vitamin D deficiency during winter:

Your body may not be able to synthesize enough vitamin D during winter due to lack of exposure to direct sunlight. And if you get exposed to sunlight, your body is generally covered in winter clothing, hence no benefit. Vitamin D is synthesized in the body when our body get exposed to sunlight, hence vitamin D is not a vitamin in true sense, as per definition of vitamin. To produce adequate vitamin D in our body we need to get exposed to sunlight for 15 minutes, but during winter we do not get exposed to direct sunlight. If dietary sources of vitamin D are not adequate and no vitamin D supplementation is take, we run risk of vitamin D deficiency during winter. Hence, during winter, either take vitamin D supplementation or take foods rich in vitamin D. Vitamin D deficiency is associated with increased risk of osteoporosis, heart disease, Parkinsonism, dementia etc. Recent evidence suggest that there is correlation between vitamin D deficiency and type 2 diabetes.

Heart attack and stroke risk during winter:

During winter, heart attack may not be from exertion. One of the important cause of increased risk of heart attack during winter is increased viscosity of blood during winter due to lower environmental temperature. Due to lower environmental temperature arteries also constrict which further aggravate the situation by providing lesser amount of blood to heart and other vital organs. When arteries of heart constrict, the risk of heart attack is much higher, especially among those individuals who have compromised heart function and blood supply, due to narrowing of arterial lumen due to deposition of cholesterol in the arterial wall due to atherosclerosis. Stay warm by taking all necessary precautions is the only way to prevent or reduce risk of heart attacks and strokes during winter.

Lung problems during winter:

Cold weather increases risk of asthmatic attacks as well as appearance of new cases of asthma and other respiratory problem such as pneumonia. Cold and flu also common during winter. Upper respiratory tract infection (URTI), due to viruses and bacteria is also common during winter. To reduce risk of respiratory problems during winter take precautionary measures to prevent getting exposed to cold. Cover your neck along with your body during winter to prevent from getting exposed to cold and prevent respiratory problems.
