Proper diet plays a major role in controlling blood sugar level and diabetes and help in prevention of complications associated with high blood sugar levels. In the latest ADA dietary guidelines, vegetables should constitute half of the food intake by a diabetic individuals (ideally a healthy non-diabetic individual can also use the same dietary guideline for healthy living). Vegetables have low calorie (and low carbohydrates) and high fiber along with high amount of other essential nutrients namely vitamins, minerals and trace minerals. Due to high fiber content vegetables ca fill the stomach and reduce total calorie (carbohydrate) intake. So, fill half of your food plate with vegetables, which makes you eat fewer simple carbohydrates (that raise blood sugar faster) and reduce intake of saturated fats, which increase insulin resistance.

Whole grains:

Eat whole grain cereal breakfast if you have diabetes and pack yourself with high fiber. Preferably, eat whole grain cereal with vegetables for the breakfast and make breakfast your major meal and most important meal of the day. Studies shows that eating a large breakfast with vegetables and cereals actually help you reduce food intake.

Fish contain very high protein content and high amount of unsaturated fatty acids (such as omega-3-fatty acids) with little or no carbohydrate, which makes fish ideal for diabetes. Omega-3-fatty acids and other unsaturated fatty acids help in reducing bad cholesterol and increasing good cholesterol HDL. If you are diabetic, eat fish regularly, preferably daily or at least twice a week.

Fruits:

Fruits have same qualities as vegetables (full of vitamins, minerals and other essential nutrients such as antioxidants) with an additional advantage, i.e. fruits are eaten raw, which helps you get most of the nutrients present in fruits, unlike vegetables which need to be cooked before eating. Cooking can destroy or reduce various nutrient contents in vegetables such as water-soluble vitamins (vitamin C, B-complex group etc.). Eat a serving or two of fresh locally grown fruits daily. Avoid some fruits with high glycemic index, such as watermelon, pineapple etc.

Nuts:

Nuts are good for diabetes patients. Nuts have low carbohydrate content and they are rich in good fat, which helps in fighting various heart diseases. Nuts are also rich source of vitamins (especially vitamin E and other fat-soluble vitamins) and minerals. Nuts are high in calorie and should be taken in moderation for best result.
