Energize Your Brain With Turmeric

Most seniors experience conditions that impair their cognitive function. Sometimes doctors recommend herbs to act as brain-boosters. One important herb that has been used by elderly adults for many years to boost brain function is turmeric. Turmeric has a lot of benefits. It contains an active ingredient known as curcumin which has the most effect on boosting cognition and mood. This Indian healing spice, when administered in the short term, can have a significant boost on one’s mental health.

According to a research that was published on the Journal of Psychopharmacology, turmeric’s curcumin was administered to 60 healthy adults and found to help in improving their memory and attention. The participants were given a placebo as well as 400mg of curcumin in solid form. The result was an improvement in memory and mood.

How does turmeric for brain function work?

According to researchers, curcumin has various therapeutic benefits. Other than having very powerful antibiotic, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, curcumin also has the ability to hinder the formation of amyloid pathology. This is a degenerative plaque that is very common in elderly adults who have Alzheimer’s disease. Alzheimer’s disease causes significant cognitive disease and usually affects adults above 60 years of age.

Curcumin is also known to guard against oxidative stress, enhance neurogenesis and neuroplasticity as well as the functioning of neurotransmitters in the brain. All these important characteristics of curcumin function hand in hand to improve brain health.

In fact, the same research showed that curcumin consumption can help to prevent mental impairments like dementia. Animal research has been done to show the effect of turmeric in preventing neurological pathologies. In India, senior people are known to consume turmeric as a regular spice in their meals. This group of people has the lowest rate of Alzheimer’s disease in the world.

Turmeric contains more than 200 compounds. However, curcumin is one of the most important ingredients when it comes to boosting brain health. The same herb also contains turmerone which is a compound that helps to stimulate production of neurons and boost brain repair. This is why turmeric herb has been incorporated in treatments for Alzheimer ’s disease, Parkinson’s, and traumatic brain injuries.

If you suffer from any kind of mental impairment or want to boost brain health by consuming turmeric, be cautious and ensure you get the authorization from your doctor. When taken in large doses, turmeric supplements can lead to blood thinning among other adverse effects.
