However, some simple measures (which you can easily do at home and can be rightly termed home remedies for heart burn) can help reduce or prevent heart burn.

Stop overeating:

Yes, stop overeating to prevent heart burn. As, it was mentioned before, overeating is the most common reason of heart burn. Hence, stop overeating and there is high possibility that your heart burn may disappear. Overeating leads to pressure on the gastro-esophageal sphincter (which act as valve for foods and other stomach content and prevent entry of stomach content to esophagus) and may lead to entry of stomach contents (including gastric acid) into esophagus and cause heart burn.

Do not smoke:

If you are a smoker, quit smoking to prevent heart burn. Smoking can cause irritation in gastrointestinal tract and lead to heart burn. There are many more reasons to quit smoking, other than heart burn, hence stop smoking.

Eat salad:

Take salad which is low in fat. Avoid salad which have fresh/raw onion, tomato etc. as they can trigger acid reflux. Avoid high fat and vinegar in salad.

Eat multigrain:

There can be no better staple food than multigrain. Eat bread and rolls made of multigrain. Eating multigrain will not lead to acid reflux and heart burn.

Add ginger to your food:

Ginger is wonder spice, it can spice up your meal and at the same time make your meal beneficial too in reducing heart burn.

Control your drinks:

If you have heart burn, it is best to completely avoid alcoholic drinks as well as carbonated and caffeinated beverages. Drink plain water instead, as your beverage.

Take a walk:

After your meal, do not hit the couch or your bed. Instead take a walk and save your nap for some other time. It is simple physics, when you walk, your esophagus is at top of your stomach, but when you lie down, your esophagus is at the same level/line as that of stomach, which makes it easier for gastric acid (as well as other gastric contents) to regurgitate into the esophagus and lead to GERD and heart burn. A walk after meal can prevent this and also help your food to get digested easily. When you sleep, pop up your pillow 6-8 inches to prevent acid reflux.

Select white meat:

Red meat contain high fat, which can trigger acid reflux and heart burn. Select white meat with low fat and prevent heart burn.

These eight simple steps can help you prevent heart burn or GERD, which is such a common health problem these days.
