Eat These Foods for Healthy Eyes

Beta-carotene rich foods such as carrots, vegetables, oranges etc. are good for your eye and help improve your vision. Beta-carotene helps in smooth functioning of retina and other parts of eyes and essential for healthy eye. However, beta-carotene (a type of vitamin A) is not the only vitamin that is essential for optimal eye health. Many other vitamins and minerals are also essential for optimal eye health, although their role in eye health is not well defined as that of beta-carotene. Hence, along with vitamin A, your eye also need various other healthy foods for good eye health.

Consume the following foods for good eye health:

Leafy greens:

Leafy greens are packed with various vitamins, minerals antioxidants and fiber. Consume leafy greens regularly and reduce risk of cataract and macular degeneration. Select the leafy greens that are grown locally and are fresh. Fresh greens are excellent source of vitamins and minerals, which are essential for genera health and also for eye health. Consuming leafy greens daily can prevent constipation too, which so common in Western nations.


Consume fish rich in unsaturated fatty acids and essential fatty acids, such as tuna, mackerel, trout, salmon etc. for good eye health. These are rich in DHA, an essential fatty acid found in retina. Deficiency of DHA can lead to dry eye syndrome.

Berries and citrus fruits:

These fruits are packed with nutrients. They are rich in antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. These fruits are rich source of vitamin C (along with many other vitamins). Vitamin C has shown to reduce risk of developing macular degeneration in eye. These also reduce risk of cataract.


Almonds are rich in vitamin E. Vitamin E is not only good for your skin, but also said to prevent macular degeneration, as many research has shown. Hence, consume almonds regularly, they are not only tasty, but are good for your eye health too. An ounce of almonds provide half of your daily requirement of vitamin E.
