Frozen shoulder is a common health problem, especially among middle age persons. Although it is common and troublesome health problem, many patients ignore it, thinking that it will go away on its own. Unfortunately, if it is frozen shoulder, there is very little chance, if any, of it going away on its own. Frozen shoulder can bring your life to a standstill, practically. Commonly it affects middle age individuals. Start treatment at initial of your symptoms, because if ignored, later on it may take very long time for recovery from frozen shoulder. Good news is that, with appropriate treatment, frozen shoulder can be treated satisfactorily by an orthopedic doctor.

Shoulder joint is a ball-and-socket joint, where head of humerus (the bone of upper arm) is plugged inside a round socket in shoulder bone, known as “capsule”. Sometime the inside wall of the “capsule” become inflamed, which result in it becoming thick. Which cause it to swell and as a result it leaves less room for movement at shoulder joint, which result in pain and difficulty. It makes shoulder joint stiff and movements at joint become restricted and reduced. In medical term frozen shoulder is canned “adhesive capsulitis”.

Common symptoms of frozen shoulder:

  • Shoulder joint movements become persistently painful.
  • Joint become stiff
  • During initial stage pain can be very severe, which restrict any movement of the affected shoulder joint
  • After initial stage the pain may become more tolerable, however stiffness of joint increases and make joint movements restricted.
  • Third stage of disease is usually stage of recovery, where there is very slow recovery (sometimes there may not be recovery and the condition may persist for very long time). If there is recovery phase, the process is very slow and take very long time to recover with gradual disappearing of symptoms.

What are the causes of frozen shoulder?

  • There are various causes of frozen shoulder such as lack of lubricant in shoulder joint, which lead to friction and inflammation and formation of scar tissue.
  • Restriction of use/movement of shoulder joint due to various medical condition such as fracture or any other chronic health condition of chronic disease.
  • People suffering from diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, lung disease, thyroid disease are at greater risk of developing frozen shoulder.

Do not ignore early symptoms of frozen shoulder and get adequately treated.
