Turmeric is one of the most commonly used spices in India. Turmeric is known by many individuals as the king of spices. It has various medicinal properties (not only as coloring agent of foods), along with anticancer effects, such as antiseptic properties, skin softening and many other properties. In fact turmeric has numerous patents for its various medicinal properties. Turmeric can prevent various cancers (such as prostate cancer, melanoma, breast cancer, brain tumor, pancreatic cancer, leukemia etc.) and also slow down growth of cancer cells of various type of cancers.

Curcumin, a powerful polyphenol present in turmeric promotes a process called “apoptosis” or programmed cell death, which help to kill cancer cells without harming the normal cells. In case of usual anti-cancer treatment with chemotherapy or radiotherapy, the nearby normal cells are also affected along with cancer cells which leads to serious (sometimes unacceptable) side effects.


Ginger, another commonly used Indian spice has good medicinal properties such as improvement of metabolism, lowering of cholesterol and anti-cancer properties. Regular addition of ginger in preparing vegetables and other foods can help in reducing number of cancer cells and also help in preventing various type of cancers.

Chilli Peppers:

Chilli pepper is hot and excess use of chilli should be avoided, as it may lead to various gastric problems. Capsaicin, present in chilli can reduce cancer cells and reduce size of tumor, by programmed cell death (apoptosis). Eat chilli pepper regularly and prevent cancer.


Half a teaspoonful of cinnamon powder a day is enough to keep cancer away. This is not as commonly used as that of turmeric or ginger, however it is still commonly used in most Indian food preparations. Other than cooking food, cinnamon powder can also be used in various other ways such as adding it to your daily cup of tea, adding to your breakfast oatmeal, adding in milk or fruit juice. Make sure you take cinnamon powder regularly to prevent cancer.


Most of us use cumin at the end of meal, because it aid digestion and make our mouth fresh after a meal. But health benefits of cumin is much more than aiding digestion. Thymoquinone, present in cumin prevent proliferation of prostate cancer. Cumin is also rich in various antioxidants, which also help in preventing cancer.
