Sugar is the most common food for bacteria and presence of sugar makes it possible for bacteria to multiply quickly and cause bad breath, by producing chemical that cause bad breath. Presence of sugar also help bacteria to build up plaques and coat gums, which are also common causes of halitosis. If you eat sugary foods, make sure to brush properly and floss after eating to keep halitosis away.

It is therefore important to reduce total sugar intake. World Health Organization recently changed its recommendations regarding sugar for adults and children and it is advisable to follow the WHO guideline about sugar consumption, not only for good oral health and prevention of halitosis, but for keeping various disease away, such as diabetes, obesity, heart disease, atherosclerosis and various other non-communicable diseases. In the recent WHO guideline on sugar intake for adults and children, WHO states that sugar should contribute less than 10% of total calorie intake. It further indicate that making the calorie intake from sugar to 5% gives various additional health advantages. For a normal adult with normal BMI, it amounts to taking of approximately 25 grams of sugar or equivalent to 5-6 teaspoons of sugar a day. So, how much sugar do you eat a day? It is time to reduce sugar intake.
