6 Natural Supplements to Help You Relax

When it comes to natural supplements, there are shelves and shelves to choose from. When it comes to combating anxiety and helping you relax, most of them only have anecdotal evidence to suggest that they do anything to help you, but there are a few out there that actually do work. Some of them you may even be using today without knowing it, because they are present in many of the foods we eat and products that we use. Let’s take a look at six natural supplements that actually have been shown to help you relax.

Melatonin

Melatonin is a hormone that is produced in the brain by the pineal gland. This hormone helps control sleep cycles. Sleep and mood are a lot more connected than most people think. That’s why this hormone is able to help you relax and treat your anxiety. Short-term, melatonin can help with depression, irritability, paranoia, anxiety and more. If you take too much, you may get a headache but this supplement has been shown to be safe.

Magnesium

The next supplement that we will discuss is magnesium. Magnesium is a mineral, and it is something that our bodies need in order to perform muscle function correctly and to have a healthy nervous system. Magnesium is present in many of the foods that we eat, so some people get enough of it, but research has shown that most people do not. This is a safe supplement and you should definitely include it to combat anxiety because of what it does for the immune system. However, if you take too much it can cause an upset stomach, nausea and vomiting.

Vitamin B-Complex

Vitamin B-complex is actually a series of vitamins. In fact, it includes all of the water-soluble vitamins except for vitamin C. The list includes thiamine, riboflavin, pantothenic acid, pyridoxine, folic acid, niacin, biotin and cobalamins (or B12 vitamins). All of these vitamin B supplements are important to our body, and some research has suggested that making sure that your levels are correct can help improve mood and treat anxiety. You can find B-complex by itself in the drugstore or as part of a larger multivitamin.

Valerian Root

Valerian root is another supplement that can help with mood and anxiety. Most herbal experts recommend it as a treatment for insomnia, but there is research to show that it reduces blood pressure, lowers your heart rate and relieve stress. However, the research is rather recent and no one knows the long-term effects of the Valerian root just yet.

Theanine

Theanine is an amino acid that you normally find in green tea. It has been shown to treat anxiety and lower blood pressure. However, it only works up to a certain threshold. If your stress level is too high, then you aren’t going to be able to use it to relax. No one is quite sure why that is, but research showed that those who did not have high stress levels felt more tranquil after using the supplement, but those who were experiencing acute anxiety or high stress levels did not have the same effect.

Cannabidiol

Finally, hemp oil is one of the newest treatments for anxiety. However, this does a lot more than just treat anxiety. Hemp oil, also known as CBD oil, has benefits like giving pain relief, reducing inflammation, combating nicotine and other drug withdrawal symptoms and a whole lot more. Although it is related to cannabis, it is not the same thing and it is legal in many parts of the world. If you want to learn more about cannabidiol, here’s some information.
