In US alone there are approximately 100 million people with high cholesterol level, which is approximately 1/4th of the total population, a very high percentage indeed. The picture is not very different in other developed countries also. Even developing and poor nations also have very large number of individuals with high cholesterol.

Diet one eats:

This is one of the most important factors that influence blood cholesterol level. Human body can synthesize cholesterol in adequate amount without any external consumption through food/diet. Hence, if a person eats diet high in cholesterol (such as red meat) and saturated fats (animal fats), it is bound to cause increase in blood cholesterol. Pork, beef, eggs, butter, cheese etc. are rich in saturated fats and should be consumed in moderation to control cholesterol. Diet plays an important role in cholesterol level of blood.

Obesity:

Obesity with a bulging tummy is not good not only for social reason, but for general health and cholesterol level too. The higher your BMI, the greater is the risk of high cholesterol. In fact it may be difficult to find obese individual with normal cholesterol level. Obesity results in low HDL (good cholesterol, which should be high) as well as triglycerides and high LDL (bad cholesterol, which should be low).

Physical activity level:

Another reason to exercise regularly. Physically inactive persons have higher cholesterol (low HDL and high LDL), than active individuals.

Overall health condition:

If your overall health is not up to the expected level, you may be at risk of high cholesterol. If you suffer from diabetes or hypothyroidism, you are at great risk of high cholesterol. Hence, do not skip your annual medical examination.

Smoking:

Here is another good reason to kick away your habit of smoking. If you cannot quit smoking, get expert help. Smoking can reduce good cholesterol HDL and increase risk of heart diseases. There are also so many other health reasons to quit smoking. So, quit smoking, and now.

Family history of high cholesterol:

Unfortunately you have no control over it. If your parents or relatives have high cholesterol, the risk is high for you too.

Age and gender:

This is also not under your control. From third decade onward (20s) your cholesterol tend to rise naturally, and it is same for all of us. Form men, cholesterol level tend to rise from 20s till 50s and then levels off. For women, cholesterol level remains fairly low, compare to men, but reaches same level as men, after menopause.
