ID-10079568Most of us know what is cholesterol and its ill effects on health. However not many of us are fully aware of the real importance of cholesterol for general health and well-being. Cholesterol is like two edged sword, if high it causes many serious health problems. If cholesterol is low it may also create many health problems. Because cholesterol is required for synthesis many important hormones and other chemicals. Hence, one should be watchful about cholesterol.

An important point to remember here is that high cholesterol in blood usually do not have any symptoms and it is generally found during routine blood tests. If you have any heart related problem, you should check complete cholesterol test or lipid profile test or lipid panel test.

Should you do complete cholesterol test (lipid profile test)?

All adults above 18 years with risk of cardiovascular disease should get complete cholesterol check done every five years. You may need more frequent (yearly or half yearly) complete cholesterol check if you have any (or more) of the following,

  • If you are obese or overweight
  • Have family history of heart attack, high cholesterol or cardiovascular disease. Regular cholesterol check can also be useful in monitoring the effectiveness of treatment.
  • If you lead sedentary lifestyle
  • If you are a diabetic
  • If you are a smoker or use tobacco products
  • If you are fond of fatty foods and regularly eat high fat foods
  • If you are in late fifth decade or sixth decade of life

Cholesterol test for children:

Most medical institutes dealing in children’s healthcare recommend complete cholesterol test (lipid profile test) for children between 9 years and 11 years and a second test between ages of 17-21 years. Cholesterol test done around the puberty age may not give correct results due to hormonal changes taking place during puberty. If there is family history of heart problem during early years of life, regular complete cholesterol test is recommended.

Complete cholesterol test generally indicate testing of,

  • Total cholesterol
  • Triglyceride
  • LDL (low density lipoprotein) cholesterol
  • HLD (high density lipoprotein) cholesterol
  • And sometimes VLDL (very low density lipoprotein) also tested
