What Are Different Types Of Laser Eye Surgeries?
There are several different types of laser eye surgeries available for patients to choose from. Depending on the suitability, patient’s expectation, availability of facilities your eye surgeon (ophthalmologist) may select the best suited laser eye surgery for you.
LASIK:
Laser Assisted in situ Keratomileusis or LASIK is a commonly used laser eye surgery for correction of refractive errors of eye such like myopia, hypermetropia and astigmatism. In lasik surgery a corneal flap is made with the help of microkeratome metal blade. The stroma of cornea is than reshaped with laser for correcting vision. The corneal flap is than replaced back to its original position after reshaping the stroma. There are several advantages of LASIK surgery such as painless procedure, fewer side effects; correction of vision is immediate after surgery etc. Blurring of vision may last for 24 hours after lasik surgery.
LASEK:
Laser Assisted Sub-Epithelial Keratomileusis (LASEK) is an advanced form of PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy). Unlike LASIK, in LASEK creation of corneal flap is not required; instead, epithelium of cornea is removed after softening it with alcohol. As corneal flap is not produced, recovery is faster.
Epi-LASEK:
In this procedure, corneal epithelial layer is preserved using a technique called “separator”. The preserved corneal epithelial layer is replaced after stroma of cornea is reshaped. Healing is very fast after surgery and patient discomfort is minimal during surgery.
Custom Vue Lasik:
In this type of surgery, “wavefront technology” is used to map the cornea, as well as a guide for creating corneal flap. This technique does not have problems associated with conventional LASIK surgery and as a result perfect vision (20/20 vision or even better in some cases) can be restored.
Custom Vue IntraLasik:
This is combination of conventional Lasik and Custom Vue Lasik. It uses the “wavefront technology” software. This technique removed all the technical disadvantages of other types of Laser eye surgeries to produce the perfect vision after eye surgery. The higher cost of the surgery seems to be the only disadvantage.

I didn’t even realize that so many different Lasik/Lasek procedures existed, so I appreciate the informative blog post. My cousin had Lasik about 6 years ago and all went well and he no longer had to wear glasses or contacts until just recently. It seems like not all procedures give you long-term benefits, which is a shame because it is quite an expensive process.
