Ways We Can Improve The Healthcare System In The United States

The healthcare system in the United States is one of the largest in the world. It is currently larger than the whole economy of France. However, it also happens to be one of our least effective economic markets. While we may be finally making some headway from the 2008 financial collapse, the American people need to come together and work harder to run the economy and improve our healthcare system. There are many ways in which citizens can improve the healthcare system for the benefit of all.

Knowledge And Schooling

A great way to work on improving the healthcare in our country is by having more individuals gain knowledge and earn degrees in the field of healthcare. A degree in a healthcare field can benefit many. Making a difference in your career field for the benefit of others is one of the greatest accomplishments someone can have in life. There are many schools to earn your degree in, such as the one found at healthadministrationdegree.usc.edu.

Affordable Care

Another way we can improve the healthcare system in the United States is by enabling every American the ability to afford quality healthcare. It would benefit many people if the healthcare system was changed from a government-led model to a market-led model. The CED, or Committee for Economic Development, has began developing a policy that outlines remedies which could put our healthcare system on a more solid footing.

Help For Employers

To help with the healthcare system with regards to businesses, we should be allowing all employers the ability to offer their workers affordable plans for health care policies and also allow them to work as exchanges to their employees as well. No plans should be allowed to refuse a policy to an individual who has a pre-existing condition. Plans for people who are sick or have chronic diseases should contain benefits with risk-adjusted premiums. These types of risk-adjusted premiums are already being used in part by the Medicare Part D system for prescription drugs and is working well.

Allow Competition In Healthcare

We should allow exchanges and healthcare companies the ability to offer plans in other states in order to lower costs and raise the competition. We should also be shifting away from the fee-for-service model. This rewards only the number of services in which a plan member receives instead of the quality. Changing this can help to encourage a more affordable and innovative healthcare system. With the current structure of healthcare, our providers have a lot less incentive to adopt any cost-saving practices for their policy holders. Systems that compensate healthcare companies for the outcomes of patient care will help to drive better coordination and result in less duplicate services. This can ultimately lead to a higher quality of care for people at a more affordable cost.

While we had started the reform of our healthcare system with the development of the ACA, the system is still very broken. We need to come together and work hard to create a healthcare system which is market-based to allow for competition between insurance companies. This will help create a more affordable and high quality healthcare system where all Americans will have access to the care they need at prices they can afford.
