Treatment of Oral Thrush

Treatment of oral thrush depends on various factors such as patient’s age, immunity status (patients with weakened immune system must be given systemic anti fungal medications), whether breast feeding etc. The aim of treatment is to prevent spread of fungus.

Treatment of oral thrush in individuals with weak immune system or severe form of oral candidiasis:

Treatment of oral thrush in patients with normal immune system by severe form of disease is done with topical antifungal medications such as miconazole, nystatin, amphotericin B etc. These medications are available as tablets, lozenges or oral suspensions. Lozenges need to be swished in mouth and swallowed. Mouth is rinsed with oral suspension and then swallowed.

If immune system is weak due to HIV/AIDS, use of chemotherapy for cancer treatment, immune suppressant medications or corticosteroids, the patient must be treated with systemic antifungal medications as oral or intravenous administration of antifungal medication.

Treatment of oral thrush among healthy adults and children:

Healthy individuals with oral thrush should be given probiotics and/or unsweetened yogurt. If these are not helpful, they should be treated with topical antifungal medications such as miconazole, nystatin, amphotericin B etc. in the form of tablets, lozenges or oral suspensions. Probiotics and unsweetened yogurt do not kill candida, but help in restoring normal flora of moth and GIT.

Treatment of oral thrush in infants and breastfeeding mothers:

If a breastfeeding infant develops oral thrush, both the infant and mother should be treated at the same time. Otherwise, there is risk of passing candidiasis from infant to mother and mother to infant. Treatment is with mild antifungal agents for the infant and antifungal cream to be used on the breasts. Feeding bottles and water bottles for the infant should be cleaned properly to prevent growth of fungus. Keep feeding bottles and water bottles dry, which help in preventing fungus growth.
