Treatment of Baldness/hair loss
Baldness and/or hair loss is a common health and cosmetic problem among males as well as females. The treatment of baldness among males is different from female hair loss. Females commonly have hair loss rather than baldness. Baldness among females is rather uncommon and is more commonly seen among males due to effects of male sex hormone androgen. Due to effects of androgen the common male pattern of baldness occurs, instead of general baldness, also known as alopecia universalis.
The treatment of hair loss is different from male pattern of baldness. There are different methods of treatment of hair fall (or loss), some of them are only cosmetic treatment and not approved as medical treatment by appropriate authorities. One cosmetic remedy to loss of hairs, especially among females is to use a product (or rather say fibers) that is made of keratin (the same protein the hairs are made of, keratin). The fibers (product) is claimed to be charged with static electricity, which is claimed to help intertwine with natural hairs of the users body with a secure bonding. Once applied the product will remain for long duration.
Treatment of male pattern of baldness is more scientific, as the cause of male pattern of baldness is known. The cause of male pattern of baldness is lower level of dihydrotestosterone, which is a powerful androgen, more powerful than testosterone. The lower level of dihydrotestosterone is due to blockage of conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone, the conversion is stimulated by 5-alpha reductase enzyme. So by blocking the action of 5-alpha reductase enzyme, we can prevent male pattern of baldness by ensuring more quantity of dihydrotestosterone (a powerful androgen).
Drugs such as finesteride (brand names are Propecia, Proscar etc.) and dutesteride are used in treatment of male pattern of baldness. Both of these drugs act by inhibiting the enzyme 5-alpha reductase, thereby allow the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone. Finesteride is approved by USFDA (United States Food and Drug Administration) for treatment of male pattern of baldness.
