Three Common Diseases and Their Shadow Diseases

There are many disease that have “shadow disease”. And if you are suffering from a disease, it is very much possible that you may suffer from its shadow disease. Here some of the diseases and their shadow diseases are discussed.

Psoriasis and its “shadow disease” heart attack:

Psoriasis is a medical condition where the skin at particular places becomes itchy, rough and unsightly patches. It is an autoimmune disease that results from own immune system going against your own body. Patients with psoriasis are at greater risk of heart attack (double than usual) in compare to people without the disease. The autoimmune disease triggers inflammation of arteries, including heart, which may be the reason of increased risk of heart attack.

How to protect yourself from shadow disease heart attack, if you suffer from psoriasis?

Unfortunately, there is no effective way to prevent risk of heart attack associated with psoriasis. Treating the disease effectively also may not lower the risk and further study is required for this to confirm. One may try newer medications (such as Amevive) available for treatment of psoriasis, however the effectiveness is unknown.

Endometriosis and its “shadow disease” melanoma:

Women with endometriosis are at higher risk (more than 60% higher) of developing melanoma, a cancerous tumor of skin (melanoma is malignant tumor of pigment melanin producing cells of skin and most serious form of skin cancer). The reason of melanoma following endometriosis is unknown, but genetics may be a factor.

How to protect yourself from shadow disease melanoma, if you suffer from endometriosis?

If you suffer from endometriosis, ask your doctor to check for melanoma. If you have moles on your skin, examine them regularly for any change in size, smoothness, texture, edges, and report to your doctor. If diagnosed early, melanoma is curable, although it is a cancerous tumor.

Asthma and its “shadow disease” depression and anxiety disorders:

There is strong association between asthma and psychiatric problems. As many as 1 in every 5 asthma patient have some psychiatric problems. The cause of association between asthma and psychiatric problems (commonly depression and anxiety disorders) are not known. The asthma may itself the cause of mental stress due to difficulty in breathing. It is also possible that a patient with psychological problems may make asthma worse. Whatever may be the cause there is definite relation between asthma and depression and anxiety disorders.

How to protect yourself from shadow disease depression and anxiety disorders, if you suffer from asthma?

Asthma and depression and anxiety disorders are unlike other disease and shadow disease, where usually the shadow disease comes due to the first disease, but in case of asthma and depression and anxiety disorders, one may follow other, i.e. a patient of depression and anxiety disorders may get asthma later. Hence, if you have either of the medical condition, check for the other. Both the medical conditions are possible to manage well, hence, manage adequately, if there is any condition.
