Six Common Health Benefits of Garlic

Hippocrates, the great ancient Greek physician, also known as “father of modern medicine” used to treat various ailments with garlic. Because, garlic actually has numerous health benefits. Modern medicine also says that garlic has various health benefits in various medical conditions, such as common cold, high blood pressure, high cholesterol level, dementia, etc. just to name a few health benefits.

  1. Garlic for high blood cholesterol:

Garlic is good in lowering LDL (Low Density Lipoprotein or bad cholesterol) cholesterol as well as total cholesterol. Taking garlic regularly can reduce cholesterol by 10-15% among patients with dyslipidemia. But garlic does not appear to have any effect on triglyceride, another lipid which increases risk of heart problems.

  1. Garlic for hypertension:

High blood pressure (hypertension) is a common health problem in modern day’s stressful life. Hypertension one of the main cause of heart attacks and strokes, which are the leading causes of death world over. Many studies have shown that garlic consumption regularly can significantly reduce high blood pressure. The quantity of garlic has to be sufficient to produce significant effect on hypertension. Hence, garlic can reduce blood pressure in hypertensive patient and in some cases the effectiveness of garlic in reducing blood pressure can be as good standard anti-hypertensive medications.

  1. Garlic for common cold:

Regular consumption/supplementation of garlic in adequate quantity improves body immunity. Several studies have shown that garlic is effective in reducing incidences of cold significantly (more than 60%) in compare to placebo. The duration of symptomatic cold is also much lower among those who take garlic supplementation regularly. Garlic along with food (as spice) is also effective in improving immunity and reduce incidence of cold.

  1. Garlic can prevent dementia and Alzheimer’s disease:

Garlic is rich in antioxidants, which prevent cell damage from oxidative stress of free radicals that are generated during metabolism and various other chemical reactions in the body. Antioxidants present in garlic can reduce oxidative stress of brain cells and thereby prevent (to some extent) common brain problems such as dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

  1. Garlic for detoxification of heavy metals:

Garlic in large dose can detoxify heavy metals in the body. Sulfur compounds (which give characteristic smell of garlic) present in garlic are responsible for detoxification of heavy metals. Garlic can be as good as or better than standard drug D-penicillamine in detoxification of heavy metals, such as lead.

  1. Garlic for good bone health:

Garlic is found to prevent estrogen deficiency among females of postmenopausal age and thereby good for bone health, at least among females. Garlic is also good for osteoarthritis, which is age related bone and joint problem.
