Medical Uses of HGH

Growth hormone (GH) or human growth hormone (HGH in human form) is also known as somatotropin in human form. Growth hormone is present in other animals also and even plants have growth hormone. HGH stimulates growth in general, cell generation and cell reproduction and hence, it is very important for human growth and development (as well as for animals).

Human Growth Hormone is produced naturally by pituitary gland (anterior pituitary gland). It is responsible for spurt of growth and development in children and adolescents. HGH have many other functions such as regulation of body fluids, muscle growth, bone growth, sugar metabolism, fat metabolism, regulate body composition and may even help regulate heart functions. Recombinant HGH is also available as somatropin. Source of information can be easily found in various websites.

Many people turn to recombinant HGH, but one should use it judiciously, because HGH can be used as well as abused. Synthetic HGH by recombinant technology is being used for several decades and is approved by USFDA for use in children and adults. In case of children it is used for short stature due to unknown causes.

HGH is also used in children for short stature due to known causes, such as, as approved by USFDA,

  • Turner’s syndrome, a genetic disorder which affects girls and prevent normal development and growth
  • Chronic kidney disease
  • HGH deficiency or HGH insufficiency
  • Children who are born small for gestational age
  • Prader-Willi syndrome, a genetic disorder (very rare) that is characterized by low muscle tone.

USFDA approves use of HGH in following conditions:

  • HGH deficiency due to pituitary tumor (a very are conditions) or due to treatment of such tumors.
  • Muscle wasting due to HIV/AIDS
  • In management of a medical condition known as short bowel syndrome. In this condition nutrients are not absorbed adequately due to chronic disease involving intestines or due to surgical removal of small intestine.

However, the fact is that, the most common uses of HGH are not approved by USFDA or other regulatory authorities. One such use is to use HGH along with anabolic steroid to improve muscle building and improve performance and endurance in sports. However, the effect of HGH on athletic performance is not yet clear.
