Late Postoperative Complications of Lasik
The late postoperative complication of lasik eye surgery are generally longer lasting complications and there are several potential late post operative complications of lasik eye surgery. Some of the late postoperative complications of lasik eye surgery are epithelial growth, chronic dry eye, halos around bright light, glare, traumatic dislocation of flaps etc.
Chronic dry eye:
Chronic or persistent “dry eye†may be a troublesome complication although not very serious and it can be managed appropriately with care. Chronic or persistent dry eye after lasik eye surgery generally occur if more than 70% of the nerve fibers supplying cornea are severed (cut) during lasik eye surgery. Due to disruption of nerve connection the lubricating system of the eye is affected and can not function normally to lubricate the eye. In some patients the severed nerve fibers may never recover and lead to permanent dry eye and in this situation patient will require use of artificial tear lifelong, which can be troublesome in day to day activities.
Epithelial ingrowth:
This is a rare late postoperative complications of lasik eye surgery and estimated to occur approximately 0.1% people undergoing lasik eye surgery.
Halos around eye:
Halos or starbursts around bright lights, particularly during night is another late postoperative complications of lasik eye surgery. This is due to irregularity between parts where laser is used and where it is not used. Halos around eye is due to passing of light through the edge of the flap into the pupil, as the pupil is larger during night time. During day time pupil is smaller so light can not pass through the edges of the flap and no halos or starbursts around bright lights are seen at day time.
Traumatic dislocation of flap:
Traumatic dislocation of lasik eye surgery flaps can occur and is reported to occur even 7 years after lasik eye surgery. If traumatic dislocation of lasik eye surgery flaps occurs, the flap is required to be replaced and repositioned or in some cases may require corneal transplantation, especially if the flap is damaged.
Glare:
It is a common another late postoperative complications of lasik eye surgery. This may lead to photosensitivity.
