Know about Ovarian Cysts
Ovarian cyst may be present in one or both ovaries. Cyst is collection of fluid in a fibrous sac. The size of ovarian cysts can vary greatly from pea size to bigger than an orange and weight of an ovarian cyst also vary greatly according to the size. The weight of ovarian cyst may be a few grams to few hundred grams. Ovarian cysts are generally benign and rarely malignant.
Ovarian cyst generally affects women of childbearing age (15 years of age to 45 years) and pre-menopausal women (generally between 40-45 years of age), but can affect women at any age.
Symptoms of ovarian cysts:
The most common symptom of an ovarian cyst is pain in the pelvic area and also abdomen, infertility and hemorrhage (hemorrhagic cyst). The pain of ovarian cyst may be dull aching type, sudden severe and sharp. The pain may be acute or slow in onset. The pain in ovarian cyst may be intermittent or constant. The location of pain may be in vagina, pelvis, abdomen, lower back or thighs. Sometimes there may be discomfort in the abdomen.
Menstrual bleeding may become irregular in ovarian cyst. There may also be abnormal uterine bleeding or spotting. The other symptoms of ovarian cysts are increased frequency of urination (due to incomplete emptying of bladder), nausea, vomiting, weight gain, headache, bloating, tenderness of breasts etc.
The serious complication of ovarian cyst is ruptured ovarian cyst and if there is rupture of ovarian cyst it is a surgical emergency and need immediate emergency surgery to save the life of the woman with ruptured ovarian cyst.
