If You Have These Symptoms You May Have Diabetes

Diabetes is a common health problem, which affects millions of people. There are many diabetics who are not aware that they have the disease and their number is quite large. For example, in United States it is estimated that approximately 24 million people have diabetes (more than 90% are type 2 diabetes), but only 18 million people know they have diabetes, i.e. diagnosed. This simple statistics shows that approximately 25% of diabetics do not know they have diabetes. It is therefore important to know symptoms which may indicate the disease.ID-100202165

Hence, the best way is to get blood test done for glucose. If you have any of the following symptoms, get blood test done and consult your doctor.

Slow healing of small/minor cuts:

Cuts, bruises or minor skin infections that do not heal quickly is a sign of diabetes. Healing becomes slow because of the damage to the blood vessels that occur due to flowing of excess glucose in blood through these blood vessels. Hence, blood cannot supply adequate materials for quick/normal healing of even minor cuts and bruises. If you notice this slow healing, get blood test done and see your doctor.

Weight loss:

If you have excessively high blood glucose, you may lose weight rapidly, e.g. 10 to 20 pounds in a few months, which is not normal or healthy weight loss. Due to low insulin level, glucose may not enter into cells and the body think it is starving and starts using protein from muscles as alternative fuel, which lead to weight loss. Kidneys are also overworked to remove glucose (lead to kidney damage too, known as diabetic nephropathy) which lead to loss of calories and weight loss.

Skin problems:

Skin problems are common for diabetics. Acanthosis nigricans, a skin problem is particularly very common among diabetics. In acanthosis nigricans the skin around neck and armpit becomes dark. Hence, anybody suffering from acanthosis nigricans, blood glucose testing is must. If anybody has developed acanthosis nigricans it is indicative of insulin resistance, although blood glucose level may not be very high. Due to poor blood supply to skin, the skin may become itchy, and dry.

Frequent yeast infection:

In diabetes the immune system is not normal and it can be considered as immunosuppressed state and as a result, diabetics are susceptible to various infections, especially infection by commensals, normally which remain in body without harming the individual. When immunity is below normal these commensals may become pathogenic and cause infection. Most commonly, fungal infection occurs in such state, such as candida albicans which cause yeast infection. In sugar rich medium bacteria and fungi thrive, leading to infection. Women are common sufferer of vaginal yeast infection cause by candida albicans and need to be watchful and get blood sugar checked, if they get vaginal yeast infection.
