Fever Symptoms

Fever is temporary increase in body temperature above that is considered normal. A body temperature of 98.6 degree Fahrenheit (or 37 degree Centigrade/Celsius) is considered normal body temperature. Hence, any increase in body temperature above98.6 degree Fahrenheit (or 37 degree Centigrade/Celsius) can be considered as fever. If you have fever, it indicates that something is wrong with your body temperature regulation due to some cause (such as infection, inflammation etc.). In general for adults slight increase in body temperature (up to 103 degree Fahrenheit) usually does not cause much discomfort, however for children fever may indicate serious infection and you should not delay in treating a child with fever.

Fever is actually a defense mechanism of human body and help to fight many infections. Hence, it is best sometimes to leave fever untreated. For treatment of fever there are several over the counter medications available, which can be used at home. Most of fevers usually go away on its own within a few days, hence need no treatment.

What are the symptoms of fever?

Obviously the most important symptom of fever is raise in body temperature. However, depending on the cause of fever, there may be many other additional symptoms of fever other than rise in body temperature and they include:

  • Sweating due to rise in body temperature
  • Shivering which leads to further rise in body temperature
  • Dehydration (due to excessive sweating)
  • Headache and body ache (muscle ache)
  • Loss of appetite and generalized weakness

High fever (body temperature of 103 degree Fahrenheit or higher) may have additional symptoms of fever, which are usually not seen in low fever, such as:

  • Mental confusion and disorientation
  • Hallucination
  • Convulsion
  • Irritability
  • Severe dehydration

In general fever usually does not require immediate medical attention for adults. However for children if there is fever, it need to be taken to health care provider/doctor. In addition, adults, if they have any of the following symptoms along with fever, should be taken to doctor immediately:

  • Severe headache
  • Sore throat or swelling of throat
  • Fever for many days
  • Skin rash
  • Breathlessness
  • Vomiting
  • Seizure or convulsion
  • Neck rigidity
  • Pain during urination or abdominal pain
  • Any other abnormal symptom
