Are You at Risk of Dehydration? Find Out

Summer time is a risk of dehydration, especially for children. Because it is vacation time and due to availability of free time, children tend to play outdoor for long hours and risk dehydration. Make sure your children get adequately hydrated during summer while playing outdoor. However, not only children, anyone can be get dehydration, hence, all of us need to be careful and remain adequately hydrated during summer, during severe physical exercise and during fever and chronic illness.

Following are at greater risk of dehydration:

Elderly individuals:

Elderly people are more susceptible to dehydration. As age increases your ability to retain water is reduced, thirst sense becomes less accurate and ability to respond to temperature change is reduced. All these factors increase risk of dehydration among elderly people. Some elderly people suffering from senile dementia may forget to drink water and increase risk of dehydration. These problems may be more severe due to chronic illness among elderly people.

Infants and children:

Infants and children are at high risk of dehydration because they have high turnover of water and electrolytes and because of their small body. They are also at greater risk of diarrhea, which is an important cause of dehydration.

Individuals with chronic illness:

Chronic illness, especially among elderly, such as uncontrolled diabetes is a great risk of dehydration. Many other chronic diseases are no less serious, such as kidney diseases and heart diseases. Sometimes even common cold is a risk factor of dehydration.

Exercise and work in hot and humid weather:

This is a risk factor, if you have to do physical work outside in hot and humid weather or if you do rigorous exercise in such weather. Be sure to be ready with adequate fluids and keep taking fluids, if you work or exercise in hot and humid weather.

Endurance athletes:

Athletes who train and participates in extreme spots such as marathons, triathlons, mountain climbing expeditions and long distance cycling tournaments are at greater risk of dehydration. If you are one such person, be sure to take fluids rich in electrolytes adequately during such training exercises.

If you are at high altitude:

People living and working at high altitude of over 8,000 to 9,000 feet above sea level are at higher risk of dehydration. This is a greater problem for people who is from plains and during acclimatization to high altitude area, risk of dehydration and other medical problems is much higher.

During summer, stay well hydrated. Keep drinking fluid at regular interval, even if you are not doing physical work or exercise. The amount of fluid you drink should be proportionately higher to your intensity of work. Stay safe during summer by drinking lots of fluid. Never mind drinking excess, because if you drink excess fluid, it will be lost through kidney easily without any problem.
