Causes of Nausea and Vomiting

The causes of nausea and vomiting can be divided into three broad categories namely intra-peritoneal, extra-peritoneal and due to medications/metabolic disorders.

Intra-peritoneal (due to some pathology inside peritoneum) causes:

  1. Obstructing disorders like obstruction of pyloric part of stomach, obstruction of small bowel, obstruction of colon and superior mesenteric artery syndrome.
  2. Inflammatory diseases such as cholecystitis (inflammation of gall bladder and inflammation is generally due to infection), hepatitis (infection/inflammation of liver), pancreatitis (infection/inflammation of pancreas), appendicitis (infection/inflammation of appendix) etc.

Skin Cancers due to Sun Exposure

Exposure to sun causes nonmelanoma cancers and melanoma of the skin. But the evidence of the role of sun exposure in causation of nonmelanoma (basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma) is more direct than in melanoma. As approximately 80% of nonmelanoma skin cancers develop on exposed parts of body, including the face, the neck, and the hands. So for maintaining patients’ health state of skin health it is better to avoid sun as much as possible.

Risk factors of skin cancer:

Major risk factors of skin cancer are male sex, childhood sun exposures, older age, fair skin (white race), and residence at latitudes closer to the equator. Whites of darker complexions (like Hispanics) have one-tenth the risk of developing skin cancers compared to fair-skinned individuals. Blacks are at substantially reduced risk for all forms of skin cancer.

How Vomiting Occurs?

Nausea is the subjective feeling of a need to vomit and vomiting or emesis is the expulsion of gastrointestinal contents through mouth, which is due to contractions of gut and thoraco-abdominal wall musculature. Vomiting should be differentiated from regurgitation, which is effortless passage of gastric contents into the mouth.

Vomiting occurs due to stimulation of ‘vomiting center’ which is situated in the medulla oblongata in the brain. Multiple pathways can elicit vomiting. Generally CTZ (chemoreceptor trigger zone) and NTS (nucleus tractus solitarious) are major relay centers of vomiting. Impulses which arise from GIT (gastrointestinal tract), throat or other viscera are relayed through CTZ and/or NTS to “vomiting center” and cause vomiting. CTZ is also accessible by many blood borne drugs, hormones, toxins and mediators which can cause vomiting, because CTZ is not protected by BBB (blood brain barrier).
