Fungal Infection of Toenails & its Treatment

Fungal infection of toenails is a common problem we face. This is commonly seen if the hygiene level of feet is not as much as required. If the feet are kept wet and not kept dry this fungal infection of toenail is very common. The feet should be kept dry and proper aeration should be maintained. Toenail fungus attack the toenail when the nails are wet and unclean.

The toenail fungus treatment can be of different types. The medical treatment can be surgical removal of the affected part of the toenail or oral antifungal agents or topical application of antifungal antibiotics. But conventional treatment with topical application of antifungal antibiotic ointment is not always successful in eradicating the fungus from the toenail. So many doctors prefer the surgical removal of the affected part of the toenail up to the root of the toenail. The removal of root is important because the fungus attack the root also. If the root is not removed the infection can not be uprooted.

The antifungal agents can be taken orally as well as given as ointment. The treatment of toenail fungus is about 12 weeks for toenails and 6 weeks for fingernails. During this long treatment there are chances of side effects that are potentially serious like heart problems (if you take some medicines that react with antifungal antibiotics and cause serious heart trouble) and liver toxicity. That is why if the toenail fungal infection is mild you can get rid of it by using tea tree oil that can kill the fungus of your toenails. This is preferred because of the negligible side effects with this preparation. This tea tree oil is even prescribed by medical doctors for it efficacy in curing the toenail fungal infection and fewer side effects. It also has very good patient compliance and failure rate is less.

Acidophilus: The Helpful Bacteria

Acidophilus is the term used for number of very important bacteria that helps us in digesting our food properly. The bacteria acidophilus belong to lactobacillus group. The bacteria got its name from lacto meaning milk (the bacteria ferments lactose or milk into lactic acid), bacillus meaning rod like and acidophilus meaning acid loving, so we get the meaning as acid loving, rod like bacteria. The bacteria grows very well in acidic medium at pH 4-5 or lower and at about 30 degree Centigrade. Lactobacillus acidophilus, L. bulgaricus, L. casei are some of the common acidophilus that are important. The bacilli are found naturally in whole of human body mainly in gastro intestinal tract, mouth and vagina.

Lactobacillus acidophilus can help us protect our body against many harmful bacteria, parasites and other organisms. Some of the strains of Lactobacillus acidophilus are considered “friendly to humans” or probiotic. These types of friendly bacteria are present in intestine, vagina and mouth and protect us against many harmful bacteria and other organisms. The breakdown of nutrients by L. acidophilus to hydrogen peroxide and lactic acid (and also some harmful byproducts) create a harmful environment for the undesired bacteria. L. acidophilus also protect us by consuming the same food that is used by other harmful bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract and thus not leaving enough nutrients for the harmful bacteria to grow and cause harm to humans.

Recent studies have suggested that L. acidophilus also helps us with additional health benefits like improved immune system, improving gastrointestinal function and by reducing vaginal infection by fungus (yeast).

Probiotic acidophilus nutritional supplements are available in powder form, liquid form, capsule and tablet forms. The probiotic nutritional supplements are taken orally preferably on empty stomach just before major meal (up to 1 hour before meal) The probiotic nutritional supplements are helpful in treating candida albicans infection, stomach upset, whole gastrointestinal upset, allergy and many more medical conditions. Some strains of probiotic bacteria can also be useful in treating IBS (irritable bowel syndrome; symptoms of IBS are constipation, diarrhea, cramps and urge to defecation after food) as recent studies in Ireland suggests and is approved by authorities in many countries for treatment of IBS.

In a recent study in Canada found certain things how probiotics act to help us. They found that probiotics acts by preventing the harmful bacteria to adhere to the wall in the gastrointestinal tract. They also prevent the bacteria to migrate to the lymphatic system thereby preventing an immune response.

Occupational Health Hazards of Agricultural Worker

Occupational health and occupational health hazards are new concept in case of agriculture. This is due to the fact of misconception that, occupational health is only in relation to industry and factories and in industrialized countries. agricultural workers have a multitude of health problems due to working conditions in the field of agriculture. The following type of health problems arise due to working conditions in agriculture:

  1. Physical Hazards: the agriculture worker may be exposed to extreme heat, cold, high humidity, solar radiation from direct and prolonged exposure to sun all of which imposes stress to the worker. There may also be excess of vibration, noise or there may be necessity of working in uncomfortable, non physiological posture for long duration.
  2. Zoonotic Diseases: The agricultural worker may be in close contact with animals or animal products, which increases the chance of contacting zoonotic diseases like anthrax, tetanus, brucellosis, leptospirosis, bovine tuberculosis (transmission of tuberculosis from animals mainly through milk of cows), and Q fever and other rickettsial diseases. But the extent the agricultural worker is exposed to such zoonotic diseases is different in different parts of the world.
  3. Accidents: Accidents are becoming increasingly more frequent in agriculture in many parts of the world due to increase in use of agriculture machinery. Other accidents like snake bite, insect bite and accidental injury from agriculture equipment is also not uncommon.
  4. Respiratory Diseases: Agriculture worker is exposed to many type of dusts like grain dust, rice husk, tea, cotton fiber, coconut fiber, tobacco, wood dust and hay fiber, depending on the products they grow and the region they live in. exposure to the above dusts can give rise to diseases like farmer’s lung, byssinosis, bagassosis, occupational asthma etc.
  5. Toxic Hazards: there has been increase use of chemicals in agriculture as fertilizers, insecticides or pesticides. And agriculture workers are exposed to such compounds which can enter the body through intact skin like organophosphorus insecticides. So, unless agriculture worker is educated in that and take appropriate measure to protect himself there is a high risk of poisoning. Suicide by consuming organophosphorus compound is very common among agricultural workers due to its easy availability. There are many agricultural regions in the world where pesticide residue is more than acceptable level in drinking water, which is harmful to not only agriculture worker but to the entire population living in that area. If there is associated malnutrition than agriculture worker is at higher risk of developing poisoning at relatively lower level of pesticide in the drinking water.
